Yankees vs Indians Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [7/15/18]

NY Yankees (62-32) at Cleveland (51-43)
When: Sunday, July 15th 2018
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
Time: 1:10 ET | TV: TBS
Opening Odds: Cleveland -120/9

The New York Yankees’ offense remains scorching hot during their current 11-game road trip, however, they can’t seem to make-up any ground on the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. New York will go for another series win on Sunday when they take on the Cleveland Indians to conclude the first half of the season. The Yankees’ dominance over the Indians and the rest of the AL Central continued on Saturday with a 5-4 victory thanks to a two-base error on a seventh-inning double by Austin Romine, allowing him to score the eventual game-winning run. The Yankees remained 3.5 games behind Boston, improving to 13-3 against the Central in the process. Didi Gregorius blasted a three-run homer in the win for his second this series after hitting only one over his previous 25 games. Cleveland lost all three games at Yankee Stadium in early May but still was hanging on to a slim division lead until a six-game winning streak at the end of the month propelled them to an eventual 11.5-game lead in the American League Central. The Indians already have lost four games off that lead over the last week and fell for the sixth time in eight tries Saturday. Indians All-Star 3B Jose Ramirez hit his 29th homer to match Mickey Mantle’s record for the most by a switch-hitter before the All-Star break, while catcher Yan Gomes was named to the squad as an injury replacement for Tampa Bay’s Wilson Ramos.

Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.68 ERA) | Indians – Trevor Bauer (8-6, 2.23)

Masahiro Tanaka has benefited greatly this season from his team’s run support and will look to bounce-back from a rough outing on Tuesday. The Orioles hit him for three runs over 4.1 innings in the 5-4 setback that Tanaka received a no-decision for. His numbers away from home aren’t good, but has still managed to win all five of his decisions. Tanaka has allowed 12 of his 17 home runs and posted a 4.91 ERA in nine road outings this year. He is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in four career starts against Cleveland.

Trevor Bauer has been terrific this season, but his bullpen failed him last time out, failing to hold a four-run lead in the ninth inning against Cincinnati on Tuesday. He struck out at least 10 batters for the eighth time this season and allowed only three singles over eight scoreless innings, but was stuck with a no-decision. The first-time All-Star still wants to pitch in the midsummer classic on Tuesday despite starting on Sunday. He is 6-3 with a 1.84 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 78.1 innings covering his last 11 starts.

This is a pitching mismatch here. Bauer has been one of the more consistent pitchers that nobody is talking about this season. The Yankees have scored five or more run in six-straight games, but I think that streak ends today. I also believe the Indians will hit Tanaka pretty hard and gain a split in this weekend series.

Pick: Indians -131
