Kevin Durant returns to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, but may have to be a spectator when his Golden State Warriors take on the Thunder for the first time this season. Durant is dealing with an ankle sprain and is questionable for Wednesday’s contest against his former team. Durant put up 40 points while being jeered by the home crowd in his lone visit back to Oklahoma City last season and may not risk further injury to play on Wednesday, though he did practice fully on Tuesday. The Thunder are quite a bit different than the team Durant and the Warriors saw last season, and are still waiting for their new acquisitions – Paul George and Carmelo Anthony – to start meshing with reigning NBA MVP Russell Westbrook. Golden State is wrapping-up a four-game road trip in which they dropped the first one to red-hot Boston, then beat Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Oklahoma City has lost two straight after a three-game winning streak against teams with losing records. Golden State took the last seven meetings, including the final three games of the Western Conference finals in 2016.

Golden State needed a big comeback to win that contest against the 76ers on Saturday and nearly squandered a 28-point lead before prevailing 118-111 at Brooklyn on Sunday. Stephen Curry fouled-out in the last game and was off the court for the final minutes after putting up 39 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Curry scored 35 the night before in Philadelphia, but was held to a season-low nine points on 3-of-14 shooting against the Celtics. Small forward Omri Casspi scored 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting while starting in place of Durant on Sunday. The Warriors will be home for three-straight beginning on Friday against the Chicago Bulls.

Oklahoma City appeared to be figuring things out during that three-game winning streak but then went on the road, where they are 2-7, and lost to the Spurs and Pelicans. Westbrook delivered a triple-double with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists on Monday against New Orleans, but was just 6-of-19 from the floor and went a combined 11-of-41 from the floor in the last two games. George, who is averaging 21.9 points a game, scored 26 on Monday and hit 6-of-10 from beyond the arc where he’s shooting 42.5% for the season. Anthony (20.0 pts/game) had 19 against New Orleans, but was just 2-of-9 from three-point range. Center Steven Adams is 13-of-17 from the floor in two games since returning from a calf injury.
The line in this game is a little iffy, with Durant being questionable, but since he practiced on Tuesday, I’m guessing he’ll play. Either way, I think this is the type of game that George and Anthony get behind Westbrook and keep this one close. The Thunder are much better at home.
