The top two teams in the powerful Western Conference will take center stage Tuesday night as the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors visit the Denver Nuggets in what could be a preview of a terrific playoff series come Spring time. The Nuggets currently own the West’s No. 1 seed by a half-game, but the hard-charging Warriors have won six of their last seven and can overtake Denver with a win Tuesday. The Warriors are averaging 130 points in their last six games and the only loss was a 135-134 overtime thriller versus Houston on January 3rd. Golden State began a stretch with seven of eight on the road by getting past the pesky Dallas Mavericks 119-114 on Sunday behind 48 points from superstar point guard Stephen Curry. The Nuggets are one of the best home teams in the league and bounced back nicely after suffering a surprising 102-93 loss at Phoenix on Saturday. They came back the next night to knock off the Portland Trail Blazers 116-113 for their 12th-straight home victory and are 18-3 overall at Pepsi Center. This will be the second meeting this season with Denver winning 100-98 at home on October 21st behind Nikola Jokic’s 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
Golden State is playing well now because they are finally healthy following injury absences to Curry and fellow All-Star Draymond Green for extended periods of time. Warriors’ fans have been anticipating the debut of another All-Star in center DeMarcus Cousins, who is expected to make that debut on Friday. The duo of Curry and Kevin Durant have been sizzling together, collecting 76 points on 27-of-53 shooting (13-of-23 from 3-point range) in Sunday’s win and average a combined 57.6 points.
Denver just has one superstar, but he’s a good one in center Jokic, who is having an MVP-type season by anyone’s standards. Jokic poured in 40 points on 15-of-23 shooting (4-of-7 from 3-point range), 10 rebounds and eight assists in Sunday’s victory, and leads the team in just about every offensive category. Shooting guard Gary Harris had a team-high 28 points in the win over Golden State back in October, but has missed the last four games with a hamstring injury and is questionable for Tuesday’s contest.
The Warriors are rolling right now, but Denver is no slouch, especially at home. The Nuggets are usually underdogs when playing Golden State at home, but have won four of the last six straight up against the Warriors when played at Pepsi Center. This is a solid Denver team that I feel will pull the upset here tonight.
