Its offense versus defense when the top two teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference clash on Saturday afternoon (CBS), as the Duke Blue Devils host the Virginia Cavaliers at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, NC. The first-place and second-ranked Cavaliers are allowing a Division 1-best 51.6 points per game, including 46 in the past four, while Duke is averaging an NCAA-high 91.7 and has scored at least 80 in 19 of its 20 games overall. Virginia is coming off another impressive defensive showing in a 61-36 win over Clemson on Tuesday. The Cavaliers hope to end a 17-game losing streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium that dates back to January of 1995, and will be the 170th overall meeting with the Blue Devils, who knocked off Wake Forest 84-70 on Tuesday and sit alone in second place in the ACC. Duke has five players averaging at least 11 points, led by 6’11” freshman Marvin Bagley III (21.6). The past seven meetings have been decided by an average of 5.4 points (Duke 5-2) and the road team is 19-6-1 in the last 26 matchups.

Sophomore guard Kyle Guy (15.2) and senior guard Devon Hall (12.7) are the only double-figure scorers, as the team is more concerned about the defense than making highlight reel offensive plays. Virginia is efficient, however, on offense, ranking 29th in three-point percentage (39.3) and 22nd in free throw percentage (76.8) despite only scoring 69.2 points a game (289th). Freshman guard De’Andre Hunter is averaging 11.6 points and 4.9 rebounds over the last seven games after being shut out in his ACC debut to push his season totals to 8.0 and 3.1. Senior forward Isaiah Wilkins (team-high 6.9 rebounds) boasts 126 career blocks, tied for fourth on the program’s all-time list with Kris Hunter.

Bagley has recorded 16 double-doubles in 20 games and averages 11.5 rebounds (tops in the ACC) while shooting 60.7% from the field. Freshman guard Gary Trent Jr. is averaging 21.3 points the last four games and freshman forward Wendell Carter Jr. is 22-for-30 from the field in the past three. Freshman point guard Trevon Duval (11.5 points, ACC-high six assists per game) will need to improve on his last outing where he was 0-for-8 from the field against Wake Forest. Senior guard Grayson Allen needs five points to pass Bobby Hurley (1,731) for 21st on Duke’s all-time scoring list and six 3-pointers to tie Shane Battier (246) for seventh.
NCAA BASKETBALL SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS
This should be a terrific game, like all other Virginia/Duke clashes in recent years. I expect Duke to have issues trying to score and spread the floor against the Cavaliers this afternoon. Virginia’s defense is really something to watch and I think they keep it close here and possibly end their long losing streak in Durham.
