The Marquette Golden Eagles have been trading wins and losses since the calendar turned to 2018 and they’ll look to continue that trend with a win in Sunday’s contest against the top-ranked Villanova Wildcats in Milwaukee. Marquette is coming off a 19-point loss at Xavier on Wednesday in which Markus Howard recorded 33 points, but no other player had more than seven. According to the latest Bracketology, the Golden Eagles are in as a 10-seed, so a win over Villanova would really solidify their resume. The Wildcats have won six in a row including the last three by an average of 24 points, but they will be without guard Phil Booth indefinitely after the redshirt junior broke his hand during Tuesday’s win over Providence. Booth is averaging 11.6 points on 49% shooting, and his absence will likely create more playing time for sophomore Donte DiVincenzo. Villanova is going for the season sweep after a 100-90 victory in Philadelphia on January 6th.

The Wildcats don’t have a lot of depth with only six players averaging more than 13 minutes per game, but they do have the luxury of bringing DiVincenzo into the starting lineup. DiVincenzo is the team’s third leading scorer at 13.2 points and shoots 43.1% from beyond the arc and has registered double-digit points in 11 straight games. Jalen Brunson is the team’s leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, but his shooting percentage against Providence (33.3%) was his worst effort of the season. Brunson has made multiple 3-pointers in 11 consecutive games and had 27 points and eight assists in the earlier meeting with Marquette.

The Golden Eagles were completely outmatched by Xavier 89-70 on Wednesday despite the 33 points from Howard, who had been relatively quiet in the previous three games – including a season-low seven-point effort in the previous game against DePaul. Marquette shot 6-of-23 from 3-point range versus Xavier, but are ranked 22nd in the country in three-point shooting (40.0). Howard recorded 37 points and eight assists in the loss to Villanova earlier this month.

Defense has been the problem for Marquette this season, but the offense led by Howard has been really good and the Golden Eagles are 9-3 at home this year. Villanova had some trouble with Marquette at home and this game won’t be easy. The Wildcats win a close one.
