Minnesota (29-34) at Detroit (31-37)
When: Wednesday, June 13th 2018
Where: Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Time: 7:10 ET | TV: FS North, FS Detroit
Opening Odds: Minnesota -145/8.5
The Detroit Tigers having been hanging around in the weak American League Central all season, but they’ll have to find some way to stay in the race without their best player – Miguel Cabrera – who will miss the remainder of 2018. The two-time AL MVP ruptured a tendon in his biceps in Tuesday’s 6-4 loss to Minnesota and will undergo season-ending surgery, leaving Detroit helpless as it resumes the three-game set versus the Twins on Wednesday. Cabrera was hurt when he took an awkward swing at an off-speed pitch and immediately grabbed his arm, but the severity of the injury wasn’t revealed until after he was sent for an MRI exam. John Hicks, batting .285 with five homers and 22 RBIs, will take over as Detroit’s starting first baseman going forward. Minnesota took advantage and moved past Detroit into second place in the division as Ehire Adrianza blasted a grand slam as part of a three-hit game in the series opener. Adrianza is 9-for-20 with two homers, seven RBIs and seven runs scored in his last seven games. Jose Berrios, who owns a 3-1 record against the Tigers, gets the start Wednesday opposite Matthew Boyd.
Pitchers: Twins – Jose Berrios (7-5, 3.66 ERA) | Tigers – Matthew Boyd (4-4, 3.20)
Berrios is coming off his second complete game of the year, but first since his season debut, striking out 10 and limiting the Chicago White Sox to two runs and six hits to improve to 4-1 over his last five starts. Berrios is a young strikeout pitcher who boasts 44 Ks over his last five starts, including nine in the victory over Detroit last month.
Boyd has been much better at home this season, as he just posted his first road victory of the season at Boston in his last outing, limiting the Red Sox to two runs and four hits over 6.1 innings. He was not sharp in the May 17th outing against the Twins, allowing only one hit, but four walks led to two runs in the 6-0 loss. Brian Dozier had one of those two hits off Boyd and is 13-for-32 with three homers, three doubles and five RBIs lifetime against him.
The Tigers are having all sorts of problems scoring runs and now without Cabrera, are in real trouble. The Twins are slowly coming back to their 2017 form and have 13 runs in the past two games. Berrios was terrific against Detroit last month and should do much of the same this time out.
