Week 3 of the NFL season kicks off with a Thursday night division game between the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars, who played two forgettable games against each other last season. Jacksonville rebounded nicely after getting manhandled by the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, but came up short in a 13-12 setback as nine-point underdogs at Houston. Head coach Doug Marrone went for two after rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew hit DJ Chark on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds left to pull the Jaguars within 13-12. Marrone’s decision didn’t pay off as Leonard Fournette was stopped short on the 2-point try. The Titans lost their home opener last week to the Indianapolis Colts 19-17 after crushing the Cleveland Browns on the road in Week 1 and are just 1-4 ATS in its past five against the AFC South. These teams played each other on a Thursday night in Week 14 last year and the Jaguars, who already were long out of playoff contention, barely put up a fight in a 30-9 loss in Nashville. Former Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry had one of the greatest rushing games in NFL history in carrying 17 times for 238 yards and four touchdowns, including an NFL record-tying 99-yarder. Their Week 3 affair was one of the worst games of the season in the NFL, with the Titans pulling out a 9-6 victory behind Ryan Succop’s third field goal of the game with 4:06 left. The home team has covered six of the past nine meetings and the total has gone over in five of the previous seven.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota was held to only 154 yards passing last week against the Colts after a 133.3 passer rating against the Browns in Week 1. Henry rumbled for 81 yards and a touchdown, as the Titans never really tried to stretch the field against the Indianapolis defense. Tennessee’s defensive unit gave up a touchdown on the opening drive for the second week in a row, but were pretty solid the rest of the way. Starting right guard Kevin Pamphile missed the game with a knee injury and is questionable for Thursday. The Titans will get 10 days to prepare for a Week 4 contest at Atlanta.
Marrone is clearly on the hot seat this season and was was seen arguing on the sideline during the game with star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. There have been rumors for months that Ramsey wants out and it appears a trade is imminent. Minshew has completed 77.6 percent of his passes through two weeks and will be the man until Nick Foles returns in a few more weeks. The Jags were without cornerback A.J. Bouye, receiver Marqise Lee, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and left tackle Cam Robinson in Sunday’s setback at Houston. Robinson is the only one not currently listed on the injury report with the other three all questionable for Thursday. Jacksonville is 5-2 ATS in its past seven September games.
Tennessee is not as good as their 30-point win at Cleveland, but they’re also better than they played last week at home. I like this team on the road and they always beat Jacksonville, winning four in a row and six of the last seven. I’ll lay the small number here against a coach (Marrone) who might not have a job the next time these teams meet in Week 12.
