Opening Odds: Golden State -11/233
The Golden State Warriors look to wrap-up their three-game homestand with a winning record and some momentum as they take on the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday night on ESPN. Golden State looked like the champions they are during their 11-game winning streak that was snapped by the Philadelphia 76ers last Thursday. The Warriors looked sluggish in the next game against the Los Angeles Lakers, but eventually got their act together for a 115-101 victory to stay a half-game ahead of Denver atop the Western Conference standings. The Spurs saw their five-game winning streak snapped on Monday with a 127-112 loss in Sacramento – the first of eight consecutive road contests spanning the All-Star Break and includes trips to Portland and Utah this week. San Antonio, who won’t play another home game until the end of this month, are currently tied with Houston for the fifth-seed in the West – 6.5 games behind the Warriors. The Spurs easily took the first meeting of the season 104-92 at home on November 18th behind 24 points and 18 rebounds from All-Star PF LaMarcus Aldridge.
San Antonio is looking to better their 2-4 mark during last year’s rodeo road trip last season, but didn’t get off on the right foot as they allowed the most points in a loss since falling 139-105 at Utah in early December. The Spurs, who are near the bottom of the league in defensive field goal percentage, allowed the Kings to shoot 55.6 percent from the floor and were outscored by 11 points in the second half. Guard DeMar DeRozan broke out of his scoring slump with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting after going 8-of-26 from the floor in the previous two games.
Golden State seems to have everything going for them now with Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, and Klay Thompson healthy again. The biggest impact though, could be the arrival of DeMarcus Cousins, who missed the first 45 games recovering from Achilles surgery. Cousins is slowly working his way back into top form, averaging 14.4 points on 43.6 percent shooting in seven games and his big dunk on Saturday seemed to wake the crowd and his teammates up in the win over the Lakers.
The Spurs are a good team, but their defense worries me against a powerful offense like Golden State. The Warriors can easily get into a groove offensively and before you know it, will be up double-digits. I think they put together a few of those spurts here against San Antonio and roll to a victory. I don’t like to lay this many points, but I don’t have trouble doing so with the Warriors.
UPDATE: After posting this article, news came out that Aldridge and DeRozan are both going to rest. The line has been taken off the board, so I’ll come back later with an adjusted line. You’re going to probably lay a ton of points if you want Golden State now.
UPDATE: The line has soared to 15 on this one, but I’m still taking Golden State. This one could get ugly fast.
