The Sacramento Kings may be the a very young team, but lately, they’re playing like veterans and will host a very seasoned team in the San Antonio Spurs Monday night. The Kings would be in the playoffs if they were playing in the East, but their 27-25 record has them one-game out of the West’s postseason picture currently. Sacramento has won six straight games at home including a 115-108 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday – a team that just won at Golden State two nights earlier. Sacramento’s young core is led by shooting guard Buddy Hield, who scored 34 points on 12-of-21 shooting to lead the way against the 76ers. The Spurs embark on their annual “rodeo trip” that will bridge the All- Star game. San Antonio’s arena is home to a national rodeo that forces the team on the road for a while and last year were 2-4 during this same stretch around the All-Star Break. This year’s trip is eight games and the Spurs come in with momentum after a four-game homestand sweep including a 113-108 triumph over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday as All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge recorded his third consecutive double-double. The Kings snapped a 14-game losing streak in the series with a 104-99 home win over San Antonio back in November.
Aldridge recorded 25 points and 14 rebounds on Saturday in just 27 minutes of action and is averaging 26.4 points and 12.4 in his last five games. Rudy Gay, who is averaging 17 points in nine games since returning from a sprained wrist, leads the team in field goal shooting percentage (52.3). The Spurs would love to see shooting guard DeMar DeRozan get back on track, as he’s 8-of-26 from the floor in two games since returning from a knee injury. Power forward Dante Cunningham (16 minutes per game) sat out Saturday’s game with an ankle injur and is day-to-day.
Hield is getting help from other young talent on the team including rookie power forward Marvin Bagley III, who recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds in a 135-113 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, then had 14 points and 13 boards in 33 minutes off the bench on Saturday versus Philadelphia. Hield and Bagley are not the only two shining lately, as second-year point guard De’Aaron Fox added 19 points and eight assists in Saturday’s victory.
I like the way this Kings team is playing right now. They’ve been great at home and the young players are coming into their own. Sacramento is a perfect 7-0 ATS in their last seven at home and are on a 20-6 ATS run with one day rest.
