The Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams contest on Sunday night could have easily been flexed out in favor of the 49ers vs. Saints contest, but the NFL already did that to Seattle a couple weeks ago in Philadelphia. Still, it’s a pretty important game for both teams as the Seahawks are battling San Francisco for the NFC West title, while the Rams are hanging onto their postseason hopes. Seattle comes in on a five game winning streak and can clinch a playoff berth with a victory or tie, while Los Angeles badly needs a win to keep its playoff aspirations alive. The Seahawks are tied for first place in the NFC West with San Francisco, while the Rams – last year’s NFC Champions – sit third. Los Angeles is one game behind the Minnesota Vikings for the second NFC wild-card berth after a 34-7 rout of the Arizona Cardinals last week. This wraps up the season series between the teams and their games tend to be pretty close. The Rams swept last year’s season series by a combined seven points. In Week 5 this year on a Thursday night, the Seahawks beat the visiting Rams 30-29. Russell Wilson threw four touchdown passes, including a 5-yarder to tailback Chris Carson on fourth-and-goal with just over two minutes left for the win. Rams’ kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a 44-yarder in the final seconds wide right after making three field goals earlier in the game. Jared Goff threw for 395 yards and a touchdown to lead Los Angeles, while Cooper Kupp caught nine passes for 117 yards and a score. The road team is 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings and the over has cashed in each of the last four.
The Seahawks have been one of the best prime-time teams in the league, going 29-5-1 under Pete Carroll and that trend continued Monday with a 37-30 comeback win over Minnesota. Seattle scored 27 second-half points on that very good Minnesota defense with Rashaad Penny rushing for a touchdown and catching another. The Seahawks now have the third-best rushing attack in the NFL and ran for 218 yards against the Vikings on Monday. Wilson passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over the Vikings and is a leading MVP candidate with an NFL-best 26 touchdown passes along with 3,177 yards, and only four interceptions. Although, Lamar Jackson will have something to say about that. Chris Carson leads the team with 981 rushing yards, while Penny has 203 yards in the last two games. The defense is ranked eighth against the run (99.6), but 29th versus the pass (269.3). Seattle will be at Carolina next week.
The Rams have underachieved all season and were embarrassed at home on Monday night in Week 12 against Baltimore but bounced back strong against Arizona. Goff had his second 400-yard passing game of the year with 424 and two touchdowns after a 0:5 TD to INT ratio in his previous three games. Robert Woods was a monster with 13 catches and 172 yards against the worst pass defense in the league. The Cardinals gained only 198 yards against L.A.’s defense, which ranks 12th overall in the NFL. Los Angeles has allowed 13 or fewer points in each of its past six victories but 55, 45 and 30 points in three of its setbacks. The Rams will be at Dallas next Sunday.
Seattle was a 3-point favorite before last Sunday’s action began and now the game is a Pickem. That’s a little too much overreation to L.A. beating a pretty poor Arizona team. Seattle has yet to lose on the road this season and are 6-1 ATS in their past seven games away from home. I’ll take Seattle here.
