The NFC West race this season was supposed to come down to San Francisco, L.A. Rams, and Seattle, but the 49ers are threatening to runaway and hide halfway through the season. The last remaining unbeaten team will host the Seahawks on Monday Night Football in the first of two meetings between these clubs. Seattle is hanging on, but a loss here could pretty much wrap things up for the surging Niners. They will also play the final game of the season on December 29th in Seattle. Who knows what kind of playoff implications will be on the line then. The Seahawks, who are a perfect 4-0 away from home, escaped with a 40-34 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday, while San Francisco’s last game was a 28-25 road win at Arizona on Halloween night. Last year, the clubs split their meetings with each winning at home. Seattle rolled 43-16 at home behind four touchdown passes from Russell Wilson, three in the first half. Just 14 days later in Santa Clara, the 49ers pulled a 26-23 overtime upset – Seattle’s only loss in its final seven regular-season games. Robbie Gould kicked a 36-yard field goal – his fourth of the game – with 3:06 left in OT as the Niners snapped a 10-game losing streak in the series. Seattle has covered 11 of the past 15 in the series and the over is 5-2 in the previous seven.
Russell Wilson is having an MVP season and threw five more touchdowns Sunday in the win over Tampa Bay, including a 10-yard score to Jacob Hollister on the opening possession of OT to win it. Tyler Lockett went off with 13 catches for 152 yards and two scores and Wilson will add another receiving threat this week after the team claimed former Patriots wideout Josh Gordon off waivers. Running back Chris Carson eclipsed 100 yards for the 10th time in his career with 105 last week. Seattle’s defense continues to allow a ton of yards and points, ranking 25th overall thanks to a pass defense that surrenders 278.1 yards a contest. This is the first of four straight prime time games for the Seahawks, who will get a bye next week before playing Philadelphia, Minnesota, and the L.A. Rams under the lights.
San Francisco’s 8-0 start is the second-best in the Super Bowl era by a team that won fewer than five games the previous season – the 2013 Chiefs started 9-0 – and it’s the franchise’s best start since 1990. Jimmy Garoppolo was on target in the Thursday night win over Arizona, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns – to four different receivers. He is the fifth quarterback in league history to win at least 16 of his first 18 career starts. Tight end George Kittle is doubtful for Monday’s game after an MRI exam revealed damage to both his knee and ankle after he was hit on the first play of the game against Arizona. Running back Tevin Coleman has scored in back-to-back games and in four straight contests on Monday Night Football. Fellow running back Matt Breida boasts 322 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns (three rushing, two receiving) in three Monday night contests. The Niners defense had allowed 23 total points four games before allowing 25 to Arizona on short-rest, but still own the league’s top ranked defense overall and first against the pass. San Francisco will host Arizona next week.
San Francisco does appear to be the best team in the NFC, but Seattle is very quietly right behind them and haven’t lost on the road yet. Whenever you have Russell Wilson on your team, you have a chance to win. I say the Seahawks keep this one close.
