The Kansas City Royals will go for a series win against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday after snapping an eight-game losing streak at Progressive Field on Friday. The Royals trailed by four runs early, but rallied for a 6-4 victory thanks to Brandon Moss’ three-run homer. The former Indian blasted his fifth homer in eight games and helped the Royals to their 20th win. Whit Merrifield recorded a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to 11 games for Kansas City, while Jorge Bonifacio has hit safely in eight of his last nine and has four homers in the past seven games. Cleveland has dropped three of four since a big three-game sweep at red-hot Houston and was shutout in the final six innings Friday. Francisco Lindor takes an 11-game hitting streak into Saturday’s contest, while teammate Michael Brantley has hit safely in 10 straight for the Indians. Cleveland has split four meetings with Kansas City this season after going 14-5 against them in 2016. Cleveland 3B Jose Ramirez was 1-for-16 in the previous four games before homering for the first time this month on Friday.
Pitchers: Royals – Jason Vargas (5-3, 2.30 ERA) | Indians – Danny Salazar (3-4, 5.55)
Jason Vargas was 5-1 with a 1.01 ERA in his first seven starts but has not dropped his last two. He allowed nine runs in 10 innings combined after consecutive scoreless outings – one of them against the Indians on May 6th. Vargas has walked 11 batters in the last five games after issuing just two in his first four, while serving up three homers over the past two games. Jason Kipnis is 9-for-26 with a home run versus Vargas, who is 6-3 with a 4.33 ERA in 14 starts against Cleveland.
2016 All-Star Danny Salazar snapped a three-game winless streak Sunday at Houston when he allowed three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings in an 8-6 victory. Salazar, who has not had a very good start to 2017, had given up five runs in each of his previous two outings and has allowed two or fewer in three of nine starts – one against Kansas City when he allowed a pair in 4.2 innings on May 5th. Eric Hosmer is 12-for-30 with three homers against Salazar, who is 7-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 13 games versus the Royals.

Kansas City finally won in Cleveland yesterday and could jump-start them to a turnaround. Vargas has struggled recently, but he’s going up against a pitcher who’s looked bad all year. Look for Hosmer to have a good night against Salazar and for the Royals to take the middle-game of the weekend series.
