The Seattle Mariners, who have been awful on the road this year, open a three-game series in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Nelson Cruz’s three-run homer helped the Mariners to a 4-2 win in Washington on Thursday, snapping the club’s six-game losing streak away from home and ending a five-game slide overall. Seattle is now 8-18 away from Safeco Field and will have two games in Colorado after this weekend before returning home. Boston snapped a three-game losing streak in Oakland on Sunday and carried that momentum back home with a three-game sweep of Texas to open the homestand. Boston’s 6-2 win on Thursday was helped by Boston pitchers recording 20 strikeouts. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia left the contest with pain in his left knee, the same knee on which he had surgery in October and also hurt last month after a hard slide by Manny Machado. Boston SS Xander Bogaerts was 7-for-14 with seven runs scored and five RBIs in the Texas series. Seattle has dropped five of the last six series at Fenway Park.

Pitchers: Mariners – Yovani Gallardo (2-4, 5.84 ERA) | Red Sox – Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1, 3.10)

Yovani Gallardo had turned things around before his last start when he was shelled for 10 runs (nine earned) in just 3.2 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. He had allowed three runs or fewer in four of five starts before that ugly outing. Gallardo, who has given up five of his seven home runs this season over his last three games, has a 6.41 ERA in four career starts at Fenway Park. Pedroia is 7-for-18 with a home run and a double against Gallardo.

Eduardo Rodriguez has thrown six straight quality starts while posting a 2.61 ERA during that run after lasting eight innings in a win at Oakland on Sunday. He will be making his first start at home since April 30th, when he limited the Chicago Cubs to a run in six innings while striking out a season-high nine. Rodriguez pitched against the Mariners last season, giving up a run and three hits in 6.1 innings of work, but ended up with a no-decision.

Seattle has just been bad away from home and even their last two home games against the White Sox were embarrassing. Gallardo is the only healthy starter left after a rash of injuries, but his ERA is almost six. Look for the Red Sox to roll tonight.
