Just over two weeks ago – July 4th to be exact – the entire National League Central was separated by 3.5 games with the Reds holding down last place but with high hopes. Fast forward to July 22nd and Cincinnati stands nine games behind the Chicago Cubs in the division after a rough stretch in which they have lost each of their last four series. The Reds lost for the fifth time in six tries and fell to 3-9 in their last 12 following Sunday’s 3-1 setback against St. Louis. Cincinnati will open a three-game series on the road against the second place Milwaukee Brewers on Monday as Sonny Gray opposes fellow righty Chase Anderson. Cincinnati OF Yasiel Puig has been one of the hottest hitters in the league, batting .361 in July and has been even better this season versus Milwaukee (.389 with four homers and 12 RBI). The Brewers are trending in the opposite direction after losing three straight to the Reds earlier this month. Milwaukee has won five of their last six following Sunday’s 7-4 victory at Arizona, which allowed them to maintain a one-half game lead for the second wild-card spot in the National League and remain two back of the Cubs. Rookie 2B Keston Hiura has multiple hits in eight of his last 10 games for Milwaukee and at least one hit in 17 of his last 19. The Brewers hold a 7-6 edge in the season series but Cincinnati has shutout Milwaukee three times.

Pitchers: Reds – Sonny Gray (5-6, 3.40 ERA) | Brewers – Chase Anderson (5-2, 3.96)

Gray could be the front-runner for the NL Pitcher of the Month so far after limiting some pretty good offenses in check the last three starts, including Milwaukee. He shutout the Brewers over eight innings on July 3rd, then held Colorado to one run in seven innings – at Coors Field. Gray’s latest outing was a 5-2 loss at the Cubs but he allowed just two hits – two solo homers – on Wednesday across six innings. He is 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in three starts this season against Milwaukee.

Anderson has also been rolling along lately, surrendering no more than two runs in each of his last five starts including 5.2 scoreless innings Wednesday in a victory over Atlanta. The Brewers have won only two of those five starts because their porous bullpen couldn’t support the righty. Anderson is 5-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 13 career starts versus the Reds.

Both Gray and Anderson have been pitching outstanding lately, but the Milwaukee offense is heating up again, while the Reds are in a funk. Look Cincinnati’s slide to continue in the series opener here.
