The New York Yankees offense finally broke out late in Tuesday’s contest with the Tampa Bay Rays and they’ll look to build on that momentum when the teams continue their four-game series on Wednesday night. The Bronx Bombers hadn’t scored more than four runs in a game since an 8-4 win at Tampa Bay on July 5th, and were down 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. That’s when Aaron Judge belted a go-ahead two-run homer and Didi Gregorius broke the game open with a grand slam that ended a personal 1-for-23 skid as New York extended its lead to six games over Tampa Bay with an 8-3 victory. Edwin Encarnacion, who homered twice in Monday’s series opener, blasted his 28th of the season on Tuesday. Tampa Bay’s Austin Meadows extended his hitting streak to seven games with his 14th homer, while 3B Yandy Diaz has four multi-hit performances in his last six games. Rays OF Tommy Pham has struck out 21 times against the Yankees this season, including four on Tuesday. Tampa Bay right hander Yonny Chirinos will oppose the 11-2 Domingo German on Wednesday. The teams will wrap-up their four-game series Thursday night.

The Rays had lost five games in a row in which Chirinos started until they cruised to a 16-4 win over hapless Baltimore on Friday. Chirinos allowed two runs on four hits with a career-high eight strikeouts over seven innings to win for the first time since June 7th. This will be his fifth start of 2019 against the Yankees and is 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA thus far.

German has been dominant in his two starts since a month-long stint on the injured list, allowing just one run on eight hits over 12 innings while striking out 13 without walking a batter in wins over the Mets and Blue Jays. Ji-Man Choi and Meadows homered off German in the May 10th contest and has allowed four homers in three career outings against Tampa Bay.
I’ve been waiting for the Yankees to bust loose again, and last night could have been the spark they needed to get back on track offensively. German has been pretty solid all season, especially in his last two outings and I expect another strong performance here.
