The Texas Rangers were one of the early surprises in the league, but have since taken a nose-dive. They have lost 8 of their last 10 games and have had trouble scoring runs. In those 10 games, they have been outscored 45-25. They still have a decent offense, but their pitching is finally living down to their expectations. They rank near the bottom of almost every pitching statistic as well as errors made on defense. They’re going to need to pick up the offense and start outscoring teams or their season will be done before the trade deadline. Wandy Rodriguez will make his 13th start tonight for the Rangers and he got lit up on Wednesday against Oakland. The A’s pounded out 11 hits and scored 8 runs in Rodriguez’s 4 innings of work. Prior to that, Rodriguez had put together three pretty good starts in a row against the Royals, Twins, and Angels. Overall he is 4-3 with a 4.06 ERA. The Baltimore Orioles are a team going in the opposite direction. They are one of the hottest teams in baseball. Since June 4th they are 18-5. They even shut out the Indians twice yesterday to complete a 3-game sweep. Surprisingly their pitching has catapulted them to first place in the American League East. It appears that they are out to prove that last year wasn’t a fluke. Now that catcher Matt Wieters is back, the O’s offense should continue to produce for the rest of the season. They key will be the starting pitching. To me, they really don’t have a true ace. Bud Norris will start tonight and he might be the worst starting pitcher statistically in the majors. Check out these hideous numbers: 2-6, 6.70 ERA, .366 OBP, 1.61 WHIP. I guess the O’s don’t have a pitcher in the Minors ready to take over Norris’ spot. He faced Texas once last year and it wasn’t pretty. He allowed 5 runs in 5 innings, but got enough run support to get the win. I’m going to have to take the over in this one. I can’t see laying -132 on Bud Norris and the Rangers are slumping. Enjoy the ESPN Monday Night game and root for both teams. Pick: OVER 8.5 -120 |
