A trip to the Elite Eight is on the line when the Kansas Jayhawks basically host the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday night. Kansas City is just a short drive from the Jayhawks’ campus in Lawrence, so they will have the faithful behind them. The Jayhawks have won 10 of their last 11 and are averaging 95 points in the first two games of the NCAA Tournament with Frank Mason III and freshman swingman Josh Jackson each averaging at least 20. Mason is averaging 24.2 points over the last five games to push his team-leading mark to 20.8 – to go along with 5.2 assists – and is shooting 47.2% from 3-point land. Junior backcourt mate Devonte’ Graham, who leads the team with 89 made 3’s, had an outstanding start to the NCAA Tournament while averaging 17 points on 11-of-17 shooting – 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. Jackson is averaging 20 points in the Tournament while junior guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk adds 12.5 and has eight of his 66 3-pointers in his last four games. Senior forward Landen Lucas leads the team in rebounding (8.6) and has three straight double-doubles. The Jayhawks took the last meeting with Purdue back in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, 63-60.

While the Jayhawks rely on their long range shooting, Purdue boasts one of the best frontcourts in the nation led by one of the best big men, Caleb Swanigan, who is averaging 18 points, 13 boards, 5.5 assists and two blocks per game in the Big Dance. Purdue, the Big Ten regular season champions, knocked off a pesky Vermont team in the first round 80-70, then edged Iowa State by four on Saturday. Swanigan not only produces big numbers (18.5 points, 12.6 rebounds overall), but his presence creates enough space for the Boilermakers to hit the open three. Purdue made 305 shots from 3-point range with a 40.4% success rate this season. Junior forward Vince Edwards is one of five players to make at least 40 shot from long range this year and is 19-of-30 from the field overall in the Big Dance, averaging 21.0 – more than eight points above his average. Junior guard Dakota Mathias leads Purdue with 71 made 3-pointers and is converting a team-best 45.8% of his attempts. Junior center Isaac Haas (12.6 points, 58.8% FG) gives the Boilermakers another major inside threat to go along with Swanigan.

Kansas has had some trouble this season covering the spread as favorites, but they have stepped up their play in this tournament. The Jayhawks also have a pretty good inside game that I believe can match with Swanigan. I’m going to lay the points in this one as Kansas will pull away in the second half.
Pick: Kansas -5
