Two National League Central teams begin a two-game series on Tuesday as the Milwaukee Brewers host the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park. With four teams in the Central within four games of each other – including these two – this brief series is very important. The Brewers spent most of the first half in first place before giving way to the Chicago Cubs, but broke a six-game slide with back-to-back wins over the weekend as the offense took over finally. Milwaukee, which started the offensive explosion in an 11-10 loss on Friday, recorded 13 runs in wins on Saturday and Sunday over the Cincinnati Reds and got a boost in the series finale from new clean-up hitter Neil Walker, who went 2-for-4 in his team debut after being acquired from the New York Mets. The Pirates are two games behind the Brewers and have not hit the ball well after managing a total of three runs in back-to-back losses at Toronto over the weekend. One of their best hitters, Gregory Polanco (hamstring), sat out Sunday and could be placed on the 10-day disabled list. Pittsburgh will try to break-out on Tuesday to support the struggling Ivan Nova, who goes up against Milwaukee righty Zach Davies.

Nova is winless in his last four starts (0-3) and struggled at Detroit on Wednesday, allowing six runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks over 6.1 innings. Nova owns a 6.67 ERA in his five starts since the All-Star break, with 43 hits allowed in 28.1 total innings. He allowed a season-high 11 hits and four runs over seven innings to suffer a loss at Milwaukee on June 22nd.
Davies had a string of four straight quality starts come to an end on Thursday against Minnesota, when he was hit for seven runs – six earned – and 11 hits in 5.2 innings. Davies had one of his best starts in his previous outing, allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings at Tampa Bay. Davies was knocked around for seven runs in five innings at home against the Pirates on June 20th, but was better at Pittsburgh on July 19th when he allowed just an unearned run over seven innings.

Milwaukee’s bats are smoking right now and the Pirates are struggling big time at the plate. Nova started the season out great, but has been terrible lately. I see that trend continuing here tonight. I’ll take Milwaukee with a short price.
