Opening Odds: Philadelphia -129/8
The Philadelphia Phillies have been a streaky team this season, and are currently on a winning one as they take on the Washington Nationals in the middle game of their three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia pounded that Nationals pitching staff Friday in an 12-2 triumph as Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera stayed hot. Herrera recorded four hits on the night and became the sixth Phillie to homer in five consecutive games. He is a torrid 13-for-22 with five homers, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored during a five-game hitting streak for Philadelphia, which has scored 42 times during its current 5-1 stretch. Carlos Santana continues to improve on his batting average, blasting a home run and driving in four runs. Nick Williams had two hits and three RBIs as the Phillies moved a half-game ahead of Washington into second place in the National League East. Michael Taylor had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games for the Nationals, who have dropped eight of 11. Rookie sensation Juan Soto has hit safely in six straight games for Washington, while Phillies OF Rhys Hoskins has the same hitting streak, going 10-for-25. Erick Fedde will oppose Aaron Nola in a matchup of 2014 first-round draft picks.
Pitchers: Phillies – Aaron Nola (8-2, 2.55 ERA) | Nationals – Erick Fedde (0-2, 5.63)
Nola was bound to have an off night sooner or later, and his last start was it. He lasted a season-low 4.1 innings and surrendered four runs on seven hits in a no-decision at Milwaukee. That ended a stretch of allowing one run or fewer in six of his previous eight outings. The slumping Bryce Harper is 8-for-17 with two homers off Nola, who is 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 starts versus Washington, but pitched well against them in his last three of 2017.
Fedde was selected 11 slots behind Nola in the 2014 draft, but hasn’t had nearly the success. Fedde is still seeking his first major-league win as he prepares to make his seventh career start and fourth this season. He gave up three runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings in his last start against the New York Yankees, and has allowed eight homers in 31.1 career innings.
The Phillies are playing much better than Washington and the pitching matchup is clearly one-sided. They only reason to stay away from Philly is if the line was too high, and its not. Easy money here.
Pick: Phillies -120
