Things got heated last night in New York between the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies and the teams will battle again on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game series. With one out and the Phillies up 4-3 on Saturday, Todd Frazier was plunked by Phillies starter Jake Arrieta. Frazier, who was also hit on Friday, glared at Arrieta as he slowly walked to first base. Home plate umpire Tripp Gibson then warned both benches, at which point Frazier stormed off first base and began yelling at Gibson before he was ejected. Amed Rosario was then hit by a pitch two batters later, but when Arrieta wasn’t ejected, Mets manager Mickey Callaway bolted out of the dugout and earned himself an ejection. Tomas Nido cleared the bases in the next at-bat to give the Mets a 6-4 lead. New York’s bullpen finally had a solid outing, allowing one run and five hits over four innings after surrendering 27 runs and 35 hit over 17.2 innings in losing its six previous games against Philadelphia. The Phillies are 13-21 since climbing a season-high 11 games over .500 on May 29th and remain 6.5 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta after the Braves fell on Saturday to Miami. Maikel Franco finished 3-for-4 with a home run on Saturday and is batting .340 with six home runs and 15 RBI against the Mets this season. Bryce Harper is one walk away from becoming the first player since Joey Votto in 2012 to record at least 50 runs, 25 doubles and 60 walks before the All-Star break. Righties Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler will square-off for the second time in 10 days.

Nola has been on a roll of late, getting his ERA under four with two consecutive scoreless outings. He pitched eight strong innings against the Braves on Tuesday while striking out eight to win for the first time in over a month. He came away with a no-decision in his previous start against the Mets despite allowing one hit and one walk over seven scoreless frames. Nola is 6-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 career starts against the Mets.

Wheeler has been terrific in his last three trips to the mound, allowing a total of four runs in 19.1 innings against the Cubs, Phillies, and Yankees, but came away with two no-decisions in that span. He limited the Phillies to one run and two hits in six innings against Nola on June 27th but the bullpen allowed Philadelphia to win 6-3. Wheeler is 5-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 13 career starts versus the Phils.
I like both pitchers in this contest, but I can see this game coming down to the bullpens once again. The Phillies don’t have a terrific pen, but the we all know the Mets are terrible. Look for the Phillies to take a close one here.
