The Workday Charity Open has replaced the John Deere Classic this year and will come from the famed Muirfield Village Golf Club outside Columbus, Ohio. John Deere had been held annually since 1972, but tournament organizers opted to cancel it in late May over concerns that no fans would be allowed to attend and the small facilities would make it difficult for players to practice social distancing.
The John Deere would have attracted one of its better fields in years. Normally, it’s held the week before the British Open and many of the top players have opted out of it in the past. This year’s Open Championship has been canceled. Justin Thomas comes into this week’s Workday Charity Open as the +1200 favorite over at Bovada Sportsbook.
Players who are entered into this week’s tournament should get used to it if they play next week as well. The Memorial Tournament will take place next weekend at this exact same Muirfield Village Golf Club. Tiger Woods is expected to make his restart debut at the Memorial. The course will be set up a bit differently this week than next, with slightly shorter rough and green speeds. Some tee boxes will be changed as well.
The Workday Charity Open is expected to field 157 players barring withdrawals related to the Coronavirus like we’ve seen in past weeks, with a $6.2 million purse that is one of the lowest on Tour. Bryson DeChambeau, who won the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday and is now the betting favorite in all three majors, is taking the week off. After Thomas, the next favorite is Brooks Koepka at +1400. He withdrew from the Travelers out of caution after his caddie tested positive for the Coronavirus but is back this week.
Patrick Cantlay is the defending champion of the Memorial Tournament, but again the course is going to be quite a bit different this week. He and Jon Rahm are +1400.
