The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to get their stagnant offense going when they continue their five-game road trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night. Pittsburgh, who has scored fewer than three goals in five consecutive games, are currently sitting in the seventh position in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins have dropped the first two games of the trip and three in a row on the road overall, scoring one goal in each of the losses. They posted a pair of overtime home victories in between, with both ending in 2-1 wins. One of those victories came last Tuesday against Edmonton, which is in the middle of a five-game homestand, splitting the first two contests. The Oilers edged Dallas 5-4 on Thursday before dropping a 5-2 decision to Washington two days later for their fourth loss in six home games.
Pittsburgh has been outscored 9-2 over the first two games of the road trek, with Evgeni Malkin scoring in each of the losses. The Russian, who is a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner, is tied with captain Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary for the team lead in goals (five) and even with Phil Kessel for tops on the club in points (13). Malkin boasts four goals and five assists over his last seven games. All 22 players who have skated for the Penguins this season have a negative +/- rating, with D Kris Letang being worst at -14.

Connor McDavid leads the team with five goals but has yet to score on the power play, where Edmonton is 4-for-33 on the season. Three of McDavid’s goals came on opening night versus Calgary, then went goalless in seven straight. The Oilers’ special teams could use plenty of improvement, as they are tied with Anaheim for 29th in the league with a 12.1% success rate with the man advantage while ranking 30th on the penalty kill (70.3%). Edmonton is a dismal 0-for-12 on the power play over its last four games. Patrick Maroon is riding a five-game point streak during which he has recorded four goals and an assist.
Pittsburgh must be suffering from a Stanley Cup hangover, which is odd since they didn’t last season. I’m sure they will get their act together when they need to, but right now, I can’t bet on them. Edmonton is struggling as well, but I like them in this spot at home.
