The Padres and Nationals will play the rubber match of their 3-game series tonight at Nationals Park in D.C. Last night, the Padres got off to a 5-0 lead before the Nats crept back into it only to fall 6-5. San Diego still has dreams of winning the N.L. West, but they’re still 7 games behind the Dodgers. The Padres have been playing better ball lately, but it might be too late. Last night’s win was their 6th in 8 games. A Win tonight would carry some momentum into Philadelphia this weekend to play the lowly Phillies. Andrew Cashner start tonight and he was supposed to be one of the reason’s San Diego was a dark-horse this year. However, that has not panned out as he sits a 5-12 on the year with an ERA of 4.03. He is coming off a strong outing on Saturday in a win over the Cardinals.
The Nationals keep falling further and further behind the Mets in the National League East. A Wild Card bid is out of the question, so they need to win the division. They had won 3 in a row before last night, but it seems that every time they win, the Mets win also and when the Mets lose, the Nats lose. It’s been that kind of a frustrating year for them. They rank 23rd in the Majors with a .248 batting average. Bryce Harper has been the only hitting star this year and if it wasn’t for him, the Nats would be long out of it.
Joe Ross goes for Washington tonight and he’s been terrific at home, but I just can’t lay -164 on a team that’s struggling as much as the Nationals. Look for San Diego to win tonight.
