Two teams with opposite four-game streaks will meet on July 4th at Dodger Stadium as the hometown Dodgers host the Baltimore Orioles. L.A. comes in winners of four straight after a three-game sweep of the Rockies and have allowed a total of three runs in the last four. The Dodgers starting rotation has spent a lot of time on the DL this season, but Brandon McCarthy made his triumphant return yesterday in the Dodgers 4-1 win. He pitched five shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out eight. Los Angeles catcher Yasmani Grandal has heated up with two homers and four RBIs in his last four games. The Orioles have matched their longest losing streak of the season with four straight setbacks – all in Seattle and by a combined margin of 31-15. Baltimore still holds a three-game lead over Boston in the A.L. East, but are just 16-21 on the road. Orioles 3B Pedro Alvarez is on bereavement leave and will miss the series, but without the use of a DH, he might not have played much anyway.
Pitchers: Orioles – Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 5.77 ERA) | Dodgers – Julio Urias (1-2, 4.09)
Yovani Gallardo has stated three games since returning from the DL and is 2-0 with a 4.41 ERA. He recorded his first quality start of the season at San Diego on Wednesday. The veteran has surrendered 16 runs in 19 innings on the road in 2016 and owns a 6.05 ERA in three career turns at Dodger Stadium as a member of the Brewers.
Julio Urias originally was scheduled to start Sunday but had the outing pushed back to make room for the return of McCarthy. The 19-year-old Urias picked up his first major-league win and completed six innings his last time out at Milwaukee, allowing two runs while working around six walks. He has struck out 34 batters in 25.1 innings over his last five outings while posting an ERA of 2.49.
The Dodgers had a great weekend at the plate and it should continue tonight against a struggling Gallardo who has been awful at Dodger Stadium in his career. You can’t keep the O’s offense down to long and they did show signs of life in the final two games in Seattle with 24 hits. I really like the over in this one.
Pick: Over 8 -110
