A couple of hot Western Conference teams will get together for the third time when the Denver Nuggets visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night at FedExForum. The Nuggets are in a great battle with the Utah Jazz and L.A. Clippers for the No. 2 spot in the standings, but are still within striking distance of the top-seeded Lakers after a 117-110 home triumph over the Houston Rockets on Sunday. The victory was the second in a row for Denver after a 121-105 blowout loss to the Rockets on the road Jan. 22. The Nuggets have won the last four meetings with Memphis including both this season, but the Grizzlies are playing much better than their last encounter with Denver on Dec. 28. Memphis has won nine of their last 11 games after holding off the Phoenix Suns 114-109 on Sunday despite committing a season-worst 26 turnovers. Not many players who took the court on Sunday were very motivated after finding out the news on Kobe Bryant’s death. “You find a way to go out there and put your best effort out there and thank God, we got a win,” Memphis power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. said afterward. Jackson had a team-high 20 points for the Grizzlies in their last meeting with Denver.
Denver continues to win despite the absences of point guard Jamal Murray (ankle) and power forward Paul Millsap (knee), with Murray expected to miss his seventh straight game and Millsap his 11th. Power forward Jerami Grant is one that has stepped up his game, scoring a season-best 25 against the Rockets and is averaging 18.2 points over the past five games. Star center Nikola Jokic recorded his ninth triple-double of the season with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Jokic has posted double-doubles in eight in the past nine games while averaging 23.6 points and 10.5 rebounds this month. Denver will host Utah on Thursday.
The Grizzlies have scored 110 points or more in 23 of their last 25 games to move up to eighth in the league in scoring at 113.5 points a game, but still allow 115.8 per contest. The win over Phoenix was their second in a row since a 95-point output in a blowout loss at Boston and the Grizzlies are in eighth place in the Western Conference standings, 1.5 games ahead of San Antonio entering Monday’s action. Rookie point guard Ja Morant led six players in double-figures Sunday with 23 points – 14 coming in the fourth quarter, while shooting guard Dillon Brooks chipped in 20. Jackson is averaging 24.5 points on 17-of-26 shooting in the last two games.
Denver is the better team despite the abscence of a couple of key players and easily own both meetings this season. The Grizzlies are playing well, but still give up too many points. I’ll take the Nuggets in a close one.
