The Philadelphia Phillies have been passed up by the Washington Nationals and will try and end a four-game losing streak to their NL East rivals when they continue their weekend series on Saturday night. The Phillies came out of the All-Star Break and mustered just one extra-base hit in Friday’s 4-0 setback to fall 1.5 games behind Washington for the top wild card spot, but still maintain the second position by a half-game. It was Philadelphia’s 13th loss in its last 21 contests – a stretch that includes four consecutive defeats against Washington. Former National Bryce Harper has heated up, batting .322 with four homers, 12 RBI, 12 walks and 12 runs scored over his last 16 games. Washington won for the 16th time in its last 20 games and improved to 29-11 since starting the season 19-31. The Nats have been doing with some great pitching, including six scoreless innings from Stephen Strasburg on Friday. Nationals starting pitchers have posted a 1.20 ERA and combined to strike out 71 batters across 52.2 innings over the last eight games. Saturday’s pitching matchup should be a good one with Patrick Corbin opposing Phillies’ ace Aaron Nola.
Pitchers: Nationals – Patrick Corbin (7-5, 3.34 ERA) | Phillies – Aaron Nola (8-2, 3.74)
Corbin has been one of the best pitchers in the league over the last month, but hasn’t been very good on the road overall this season. The lefty did have one of his better starts away from home on June 26th when he limited the Miami Marlins to one run and three hits over seven innings, but overall has a 5.26 road ERA. Corbin, who has allowed a total of four runs over his last four turns, has surrendered four runs over 13 innings in two starts against the Phillies this season.

Corbin will face another hot pitcher in Nola, who went 2-1 with a 0.61 ERA while striking out 34 across 29.2 innings over his last four starts leading up to the All-Star Break. He held the Mets to two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks in 6.2 innings on Sunday. The Phillies have lost the last four games Nola has started against Washington and the 2018 All-Star allowed 17 runs over 21.1 innings in those outings.
Both of these pitchers have been outstanding lately and the Phillies are really struggling to score some runs. Four of the last five meetings have gone under and I think the offenses are going to have a tough time reaching the total in this one.
