The Baltimore Orioles enter Monday’s action tied for the best record in Baseball with fellow AL East rival the New York Yankees. The O’s return from a long 10-game road trip and will open a two-game interleague set with the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. Both teams had Monday off and Baltimore went 5-5 on their road trek, while the Nats wrapped up a 5-5 homestand with a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Orioles took two of three at the Tampa Bay Rays, losing on Sunday 2-1. Trevor Rogers will be a -164 favorite over Jake Irvin with a total pegged at 9.
The Orioles have taken nine of the last 10 meetings against Washington including a split back in early May. Washington won 3-0 before visiting Baltimore got revenge the next day with a 7-6, 12-inning decision. Since the All-Star break, the Nationals have played only six road games, going 3-3. Washington hopes to have shortstop C.J. Abrams back in action on Tuesday. He has been out of the starting lineup for the past three games as he deals with back spasms.
Pitching Matchup
Nationals – Jake Irvin (8-10, 3.76)
Orioles – Trevor Rogers (2-10, 4.71)
Irvin has really been struggling over the last few weeks, going 1-4 in his last six outings and has allowed nine runs in 10 2/3 total innings over his last two. He surrendered a career-worst three home runs Wednesday to San Francisco. This will be his first appearance against the Orioles.
Rogers will make his third start for the Orioles since he was acquired at the trade deadline from the Miami Marlins. So far, he’s 0-1 in his first two outings – both on the road against the Blue Jays and Guardians. In 10 career starts vs. Washington, Rogers is 3-4 with a 3.35 ERA and has logged more inning against the Nationals than any other team besides the Phillies.
I know Rogers has struggled this season, but at least he has the backing of a better team now. Irvin has been downright awful lately and the Orioles offense should pound him. I’ll lay the runline here.
