The top four finishing teams in the Big Ten get a double-bye in the conference tournament and the Maryland Terrapins blew a chance this week at taking that spot by themselves. They look to rebound from a disappointing 78-61 loss at Penn State when they take on the 10th-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon in College Park. The Terps are currently tied for fourth place with Wisconsin with one game remaining after Sunday – home to Minnesota. Michigan, meanwhile, is seeking to set a program record for regular season wins Sunday in their penultimate Big Ten regular-season game. The Wolverines blew away Nebraska 82-53 on Thursday to record their biggest margin of victory of the season after averaging just 65 points over their previous 11 games. Michigan currently sits one game behind first place Purdue and tied with No. 8 Michigan State for second with the Spartans on deck next. The Wolverines aim to complete the season sweep of the Terrapins following a 65-52 win in Ann Arbor last month.
The Wolverines shot a sizzling 55.6 percent from the floor on senior night against Nebraska even without Charles Matthews, who is averaging 12.8 points and may sit out Sunday as well with an ankle injury. Center Jon Teske recorded his fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds versus the Huskers, while Ignas Brazdeikis added 20 points and seven boards. Isaiah Livers also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards in his first start of the season. Michigan ranks second in the nation in points allowed (58.2) and eighth in defending the three (29.5 percent).
Anthony Cowan, Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala combined to miss all 12 of their 3-point attempts versus the Nittany Lions as the Terrapins finished 2-of-19 from long range. Cowan led the team with 15 points in the loss to become the sixth player in program history to reach 1,300 points and 400 assists. Bruno Fernando came up just short on yet another double-double by recording nine points and eight rebounds, while Jalen Smith chipped in with nine points and six boards. Maryland is 14-2 at home this season, but just 7-8-1 against the spread.
I can’t seem to get a pulse on this Maryland team all season. They are so inconsistent, beating ranked teams then getting blown out by cellar dwellers. The Wolverines have been pretty solid on the road (7-4 ATS) this season and are clearly better than the Terps. There was a similar line in this matchup in College Park last season and Michigan rolled 85-61. I’ll take them again.
