The fading Indian Hoosiers are in desperate need of a big win against a ranked team and they’ll get that chance on Friday night at home against the sixth-ranked Michigan Wolverines. The teams have already played once this season with Michigan winning on their home floor 74-63 which began Indiana’s current five-game losing streak. Indiana is in danger of missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year, but a potential quadrant one win over a Top 10 team could get them going. The Hoosiers’ shooting woes extend beyond the three-point arc where they are just 10-of-55 over their last three games and shot just 38.3 percent overall in a 73-66 loss at Northwestern on Tuesday. The Wolverines are coming off their worst shooting performance in over two years as they finished 33.9 percent from the field, but managed to pull out a 59-57 victory against Minnesota on Tuesday. In the previous game, the Wolverines were held to a season-low points total in a 64-54 setback to Wisconsin on Saturday, and hope to get back on track by sweeping the season series with Indiana. Michigan is still in good shape for a run at the Big Ten regular season title following a program-record 17-0 start as the Wolverines sit one game behind No. 5 Michigan State.
Not everyone had a bad night against the Golden Gophers, as Ignas Brazdeikis scored a team-high 18 points and matched his career high with 11 rebounds while going 9-of-11 from the free throw line. That was Brazdeikis’ second double-double after being held scoreless for the first time against Wisconsin in the previous contest – Michigan’s only loss. Jon Teske contributed 15 points and five rebounds while Charles Matthews scored seven points versus Minnesota, including the game-winning jumper as time expired.
Juwan Morgan has been a double-double machine this season, recording his seventh with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Northwestern. Freshmen Rob Phinisee (career-high 13 points) and Romeo Langford (12 points and six rebounds) contributed against the Wildcats and continue to improve as the season goes on. Race Thompson has been cleared to play and could return versus Michigan after sitting out the previous 17 games with a concussion. Devonte Green (8.0 points, 3.2 assists) has been suspended indefinitely for “not meeting the standards expected of members of the program.”
This Indiana team is fading fast and have to face a Michigan team that will be focused after a couple of lackluster performances. The Hoosiers’ talent doesn’t even come close to matching Michigan’s at this point. The Wolverines have been a solid road team and beat Indiana by 12 last year in Bloomington. I’ll lay the points.
