It is not easy to win away from home in the NBA, and after just a few weeks of the season, only one team remains unbeaten on the road. The Dallas Mavericks put that 4-0 mark on the line when they visit a very upset Boston Celtics squad on Monday night. Upset because they lost star guard Gordon Hayward – again – for an extended period of time after he broke his left hand during a 135-115 win at San Antonio on Saturday, the team’s seventh victory in a row. Prior to that game, Hayward was averaging 23.3 points on 62.5 percent shooting to go along with nine rebounds and 6.3 assists in his last four games. Boston is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers with an NBA-best 7-1 mark entering Sunday’s action including 5-2-1 against the spread. Luka Doncic fell just shy of his fifth triple-double of the season in just three quarters of action to lead Dallas to a 138-122 win at Memphis on Saturday as the Mavericks opened a three-game road trip. The teams split two meeting last season with the home team winning – and covering the spread – in each contest. The Mavericks haven’t won in Boston since November of 2015.
Small forward Justin Jackson recorded a season-high 17 points while making 4-of-7 3-pointers off the bench in the win over Memphis as eight players scored in double-figures. Star forward Kristaps Porzingis got the night off for rest but Doncic picked up the slack by scoring his 24 points in 29 minutes, while grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing out eight assists. The bench contributed 67 points, led by Tim Hardaway Jr’s 20. The 138-point effort moved the Mavericks to 116.3 points per game – sixth-best in the league. Dallas will end their three-game trek at New York on Thursday.
The Celtics have been without center Enes Kanter since opening night, but is getting closer to returning from a knee injury and is questionable for Monday. Jaylen Brown scored a season-high 30 points in his second game back from an illness and Boston shot 51.1 percent from the field and committed a season-low eight turnovers. Leading scorer Kemba Walker (24.5), scored 26 points on Saturday and recorded a season-high eight assists two days after scoring a season-low 14 against his ex-teammates in Charlotte. The Celtics will host Washington on Wednesday before embarking on a five-game, seven-day trip out West.
The Celtics will miss Hayward, but shouldn’t be counted out at all, as they still have a pretty solid team. Dallas has been a little undervalued so far this season and they look like a legitimate threat in the West. I say they keep this close or win outright.
