Everyone can read a Major League Baseball schedule and even though the Seattle Mariners grabbed first place in the American League West over the Houston Astros, we knew a tough road trip was approaching. Seattle enters the final four games of their 10-game road trip out East and have only one win to show for it. They were swept in three games by the New York Yankees and dropped two of three in Boston including Sunday’s 5-0 setback to fall 4.5 games behind the Astros. Next up will be the last-place Baltimore Orioles, who actually showed signs of life this weekend. Baltimore plated 20 runs in taking two of three at NL East-leading Atlanta, have just one win in their last 12 home games. Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo has hit safely in each of his last eight games including five homers in that span, while Seattle’s DH Nelson Cruz is making a strong bid for an All-Star selection. The veteran slugger has come alive by bashing nine home runs in his last 16 games and is on a 10-for-16 run at the plate. The Mariners hope to get SS Jean Segura back soon after sitting out the past four games with a forearm infection. Seattle will send Felix Hernandez to the mound in the opener against fellow righty Andrew Cashner.

Hernandez may never be the Cy Young and All-Star-caliber pitcher he used to be, but he does shows signs of brilliance at times. He’s allowed one earned run in each of his last two outings while striking out 12 in as many innings against Boston and New York. Hernandez has allowed just two home runs in his last seven starts after surrendering 10 in his first nine. He’s had a few rough outings mixed in including allowing five earned runs in four of his last nine starts.
Cashner was cruising against the Washington Nationals last Wednesday, but rain forced him to leave the game early after scattering three hits over four scoreless innings. Cashner was coming off a short layoff after dealing with a back injury. He made five starts against Seattle as a member of the Texas Rangers last season and went 2-2 with a 4.23 ERA.
Felix has been dominant against the tough teams, but seems to play down to the sub-.500 ones. He’s also been terrible on the road this season with an ERA of 6.98.
