Week 1 of the NFL season concludes with a great Monday Night Football matchup between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. This game marks the return of four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers after suffering a torn Achilles tendon just four snaps into his Jets career on Monday night in Week 1 last year. New York still managed to go 7-10 without the future Hall of Famer behind a solid defense. The Jets are 4-point underdogs at San Francisco with a total pegged at 43.5.
San Francisco has reached two of the past five Super Bowls but couldn’t get past Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs both times despite having leads in both games. This is a team that is more than capable of going back to the big game, but the window may be closing. The Niners are going to have to shell out a lot of money to keep their stars after this season. The 49ers are 11-3 all-time vs. the Jets and won the last meeting 31-13 in New Jersey early in the 2020 season.
NEW YORK JETS
The Jets were one of the worst offensive teams in the league last year, but that is sure to change with Rodgers back under center. New York has one of the best running backs and wide receivers in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson, respectively. Wilson was the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year but his numbers dropped significantly in 2023 with the poor quarterback play. The biggest key will be a very questionable offensive line. The defense should remain among the best in the NFL led by Pro Bowlers at defensive tackle in Quinnen Williams and cornerback in 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
The 49ers worked through some preseason issues with offensive stars in running back Christian McCaffrey, left tackle Trent Williams and receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The issues were due to injury or contract issues, but all of those have been cleared up and all should play on Monday. Quarterback Brock Purdy averaged 9.6 yards per pass attempt last season, an NFL single-season record (minimum 350 attempts). San Francisco also led the NFL in yards per play overall at 6.6. San Fran was 0-2 on Monday nights in 2023 and 12-3 in all other games.

I expect big things from the Jets this year as long as Rodgers stays healthy. The defense is terrific and Rodgers has weapons on his side. Purdy had one touchdown and six interceptions in his two MNF games last season. He will have his hands full with this Jets defense.
