After getting bombed by the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, the New York Yankees have responded with two straight wins and will look to make it three in the finale Sunday afternoon. Friday’s win clinched the 27th straight winning season for the Yankees, the second-longest run in MLB history behind their very own 39-year streak from 1926-64. Things got heated again with a home plate umpire at Yankee Stadium, as manager Aaron Boone, Brett Gardner, and Sunday starter CC Sabathia were ejected after not agreeing with balls and strikes from Triple-A umpire Ben May. New York has an MLB-most 46 home runs this month while going 15-3 after Saturday’s 6-5 victory. Gleyber Torres blasted two and Didi Gregorius and DJ LeMahieu one apiece Saturday as they go after the club record of 54 homers in a month set in July 1940 and matched in August 1998. Cleveland has dropped four of five to fall 2.5 games behind Minnesota in the AL Central but still lead the wild card race by a game over Tampa Bay and 1.5 over third place Oakland. Carlos Santana went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Indians on Saturday and is batting .386 with six home runs, 18 RBI, 16 walks and 19 runs this month.

Clevinger is coming off his worst outing since June 28th when he allowed four runs, 11 hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of a 7-6 loss to Boston on Tuesday. He was unbeaten in his previous seven starts with a 1.83 ERA while allowing two runs or less in six of those outings. Clevinger is 0-1 with a 5.65 ERA in three games (two starts) versus the Yankees.

Sabathia will be coming off the injured list for the third time this season to make his first start since July 27th, when he was tagged for five runs and nine hits (two home runs) in 4.1 innings at Boston. The hefty lefty allowed seven runs – six earned – in his previous start at Minnesota while lasting just four innings. Sabathia is 4-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 starts against the Indians.
It’s hard to believe that the Yankees are home dogs, but I have to agree with the oddsmakers in this case. Clevinger has been outstanding despite a hiccup last time out and Sabathia just can’t stay healthy. This won’t be the 19-5 shellacking the Indians put on New York Thursday, but they will get enough runs to support Clevinger.
