The Cleveland Indians don’t really have a shot at catching the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, so the focus is on the wild card and the Tribe are quietly putting together a nice run of late. They’ll look to continue their dominance over division rival Detroit when they go for the sweep of the Tigers on Sunday afternoon with Trevor Bauer opposing Spencer Turnbull. The Indians have swept a series since April but have won the first two games this weekend at Comerica Park 13-4 and 4-2, and are just 1.5 games back of the second AL Wild Card spot, currently occupied by the Texas Rangers. With the win on Saturday, Cleveland improved to 44-17 against the Tigers since the start of the 2016 season and have won seven of their last 10 overall. Detroit is 11.5 games back of the wild card and have lost three in a row, five of six and 10 of its last 13. Miguel Cabrera recorded three of the team’s six hits in Saturday’s setback, while Nicholas Castellanos has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games. Brandon Dixon has knocked in a run in seven of his last nine games after driving in both runs Saturday.
Pitchers: Indians – Trevor Bauer (4-6, 3.71 ERA) | Tigers – Spencer Turnbull (3-5, 2.78)
Bauer is coming off a no-decision last time out against Cincinnati, allowing one run on six hits and five walks over 7.2 innings to bring his winless streak to eight outings. Bauer had allowed four runs or more in each of his previous five starts with Cleveland losing four of those and he hasn’t won a game since April 30th at Miami. He is 8-6 with a 5.67 ERA in his career against Detroit after giving up four runs over 5.2 innings in a loss April 10th. Bauer owns a 2.42 ERA on the road, but the Indians are just 4-3 in his seven starts because they average just three runs a game in those outings.

Turnbull doesn’t get any run support, hence his losing record by sub-three ERA (2.78). He’s coming off a no-decision as well after allowing four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings Tuesday at Kansas City. Turnbull has faced the Indians just once in his short career, losing 4-0 back on April 11th when he surrendered three runs on eight hits across four innings.
I’m giving the pitching edge to Turnbull here based on being more consistent in 2019, but the Tigers need to give him more runs. I think they will today against Bauer, who has really struggled of late despite a solid outing last week.
