The San Francisco Giants seek to keep their winning ways away from AT&T Park going when they visit Coors Field on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies. The Giants came into this weekend’s action with an NL-low 16 road victories, but came away with a three-game sweep at first-place Arizona and trail the D’Backs by just 2.5 games entering this week’s action. San Francisco will look to improve on their 8-2 run during their 13-game stretch against NL West rivals with ace Madison Bumgarner on the hill against Colorado’s Kyle Freeland. The Giants exploded for 16 runs in the sweep of the Diamondbacks after winning Friday’s opener 2-1. San Fran is now a season-high five games over .500 after winning 10 of their last 12 and remained even with the Los Angeles Dodgers for second place in the West. The Rockies had a chance to get back to .500 on Sunday, but dropped a 6-4 decision to the Dodgers to end their three-game winning streak. The two teams have split their 10 meetings this season, but the Giants have won three of the last four after taking two of three at home last week. Giants second baseman Joe Panik is 5-for-13 with a homer in his last three games, while Colorado’s Nolan Arenado has five homers and eight RBIs in his last nine contests.
Pitchers: Giants – Madison Bumgarner (1-2, 2.51 ERA) | Rockies – Kyle Freeland (7-6, 3.29)
Bumgarner is back in Cy Young form with four quality starts in five outings since coming off the disabled list in early June. He has not been scored upon in the last 15 innings following starts against San Diego and Colorado. Bumgarner has allowed a total of five hits and struck out 16 batters over that span and went seven scoreless against the Rockies last week. He is 12-7 with a 2.92 ERA in 27 career starts versus the Rockies.
Freeland went up against Bumgarner on Wednesday and fared very well despite receiving a no-decision. He threw seven scoreless innings in recording his third straight quality start. Freeland has allowed more than three runs only once in his last 12 outings and has gone at least six innings in five straight. He beat the Giants in his first two starts against them this season and is 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA in seven appearances versus them.
Colorado just isn’t playing well enough to get past Bumgarner in this one. Mad-Bum is pitching his team right back into playoff contention and the Giants bats are hot right now. I like San Fran on the road here in the opener.
