Atlanta, GA
Time: 4:00 ET | TV: CBS
Opening Odds: LSU -3.5/58
The objective is quite simple for the Georgia Bulldogs. Beat the LSU Tigers and you’re in the College Football Playoffs. Now, there are some wild scenarios that could put Georgia in if they lose, but it’s unlikely. The objective is a lot easier said than done, as the Bulldogs prepare to face the undefeated and top-ranked Tigers in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The key matchup will be Georgia’s stout defense against LSU’s potent offense. The Tigers are second in the nation in scoring offense at 48.7 points while the No. 4 Bulldogs rank second in scoring defense at 10.4 points. The LSU offense is run by likely Heisman winner and senior quarterback Joe Burrow, who is the first player in SEC history to pass for 4,000 yards (4,366 yards) and at least 40 touchdowns (44). The Bulldogs are one of two teams in the nation (Clemson) to not allow more than 20 points in a game this season. They also only allow 71 yards per game on the ground – second nationally and are fourth in total defense (257 yards). These teams met for the first time in five seasons last year and Burrow passed for 200 yards and a touchdown while Edwards-Helaire rushed for 145 yards in LSU’s 36-16 triumph in Baton Rouge.
The big question is whether or not the Georgia offense can keep up with LSU should the defense fail. Overall, they’re ranked 53rd in the nation in total offense at 421.5 yards a game led by junior quarterback Jake Fromm, who has passed for 2,385 yards and 21 touchdowns against only three interceptions. He will be without receiver Lawrence Cager (ankle surgery) while leading receiver freshman George Pickens is suspended for the first half Saturday. Junior running back D’Andre Swift ranks fourth in the conference in rushing yards (1,203) with seven touchdowns, but left last week’s win over Georgia Tech with a left shoulder injury and is probable for Saturday. Linebacker Monty Rice leads the team with 79 tackles and Georgia has only surrendered 11 passing touchdowns in 11 games.
Edwards-Helaire leads the conference in rushing touchdowns (16) and is third in rushing yards (1,234), making the Tigers a threat on the ground as well. Burrow, who passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s rout of Texas A&M, ranks second nationally in passing yards, touchdowns, passing yards per game (363.8) and passing efficiency (203). Talented receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson have combined for 151 receptions, over 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns. The defense has been exposed at times, but still ranks 35th in the country overall and allow 22.1 points a game.
Georgia can certainly play defense but they will meet their match on Saturday. LSU can be unstoppable at times and I don’t think the Bulldogs can keep up.
