The Duke Blue Devils are coming off one of their toughest games of the season on Saturday versus their bitter rival and now must find a way to battle the eighth-ranked Florida State Seminoles just 48 hours later. This will be a pivotal contest between teams that are tied for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, 1.5 games behind first place Louisville heading into the last few weeks of the regular season. The Blue Devils came from behind to stun North Carolina 98-96 on a buzzer beater at the end of overtime. Freshman Wendell Moore came through with the winning putback as time expired, but that would have never happened if it weren’t for Tre Jones’ buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to cap a 13-point comeback in the final 4.5 minutes. The Seminoles recorded their third 90+ outing of the season in a 99-81 blowout of the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday and probably won’t be as emotionally drained as Duke. These teams last met in the ACC Championship game last March with Duke winning 73-63 behind Zion Williamson’s 21 points. Florida State is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
Florida State recorded their highest-scoring first half of the year, but led on 50-47 against Miami before pulling away in the second half. The Seminoles had 13 different players score a point in the contest and five of them were in double-digits including both Patrick Williams and M.J. Walker (14 points). They shot 53 percent from the field and 13-of-26 from beyond the arc, while holding the Hurricanes to 40.6 percent from the field. Florida State averages 75.6 points a contest and are 10th in the country at shooting free throws (77.7). The Seminoles will be home to Syracuse on Saturday.
Jones’ incredible play at the end of regulation was part of his 22 second half points and 28 overall, while also recording 15 in a row at one point. The Blue Devils are second in the nation in scoring at 83.1 per game and have won five games in a row to stay in the ACC race. Freshman Vernon Carey Jr. leads the team in scoring (17.8) but fouled out after 28 minutes with 18 points, while Cassius Stanley produced 22 points and six rebounds. The Blue Devils, who are returning home after playing three straight ACC games on the road, will host Notre Dame on Saturday.
Both of these teams are Final Four caliber and giving this many points is way too much, in my opinion. Florida State might not have the offense Duke does, but they play solid defense and have only been blown out once this season. I definitely think they can keep this close, if not win.
