Week 4 of the CFL schedule resumes this Friday night on Canada Day as the Edmonton Elks visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a battle of winless teams. Both teams occupy the bottom of their respective divisions after last week’s setbacks. The Elks are coming off a 30-23 loss in Calgary, but managed to cover the 8.5-point spread, while Hamilton fell 26-12 in Winnipeg last week as 6-point underdogs. The Tiger-Cats are 6.5-point favorites in Friday’s contest with a total of 46.5.

The Elks have now lost 12 of their last 13 games overall and are 1-6 in their last seven road games. They haven’t had success covering the number against the Tiger-Cats, going 1-7-1 against the spread in the last nine meetings. Hamilton is winless on the season, but have played well at home over the last few seasons, going 17-4 in their last 21 games at Tim Hortons Field. Hamilton won the lone meeting between the teams last season in Edmonton 39-23 as 6-point underdogs. Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns, while the Elks’ Taylor Cornelius had 251 passing yards and no touchdowns. However, neither quarterback remains on their respective club.
Edmonton had a great chance to get back into the win column last week against longtime rival Calgary, but couldn’t hold the lead. The Elks led for almost three quarters before trailing on the final play of the third quarter. Quarterback Nick Arbuckle completed 20-of-31 for 225 yards, one touchdown and one pick. Arbuckle is third in the CFL with 795 passing yards, but has just two touchdowns and six interceptions. Emmanuel Arceneaux caught the lone scoring strike with a 33-yarder and finished with seven catches for 99 yards. Edmonton’s defense ranks last in points allowed (38.3) and rushing defense (162.3). Linebacker Deon Lacey had a game-high 11 tackles last week.

Hamilton has lost the Winnipeg in each of the last two Grey Cup games and couldn’t return the favor last week in the 26-12 setback. Quarterback Dane Evans competed 25-of-42 for 237 yards with two interceptions including a pick-6. Evans leads the league with 884 passing yards, but has thrown just four touchdowns and has been picked off six times. The team’s 12 points came on four field goals and they rank dead last in rushing yards per game (44.0). Hamilton will go into their first bye next week before hosting Ottawa in Week 6.
Neither team has played well, but at least Hamilton can move the ball better. The Ti-Cats have now won six in a row in the series and are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings. I’ll lay the points with Hamilton at home.
Pick: Hamilton -6.5
