We enter the last month of the regular season and the National League Wild Card race is the same as it has been all summer. The red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks seek their eight straight victory when the visit the Colorado Rockies for the opener of a three-game set on Friday night. Arizona, who has won nine of their last 10 overall, have a 3.5-game lead over the Rockies, while Colorado leads the Brewers by 2.5 games for the second Wild Card spot. These two teams are on a one-game collision course in October and have split their 12 meetings so far in 2017. Arizona enters the weekend after belting seven home runs and scoring 21 runs while easily sweeping the leagues-best Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies don’t have that kind of momentum coming in as they have dropped seven of their past 11 contests overall, but begin a six-game homestand Friday. Rockies All-Star CF Charlie Blackmon, who leads the NL in batting average (.339), batted .383 with eight homers in August, while DJ LeMahieu is 13-for-33 with three homers during a season-long eight-game hitting streak. Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt, who ended August with 11 home runs, has gone deep four times over his last six games with 11 RBIs. These teams will finish their season series with a four-game set in Arizona beginning September 11th.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Taijuan Walker (7-7, 3.55 ERA) | Rockies – Kyle Freeland (11-8, 3.81)

Taijuan Walker looks to make it back-to-back solid starts after allowing one run on four hits over 6.1 innings against San Francisco last time out. Walker was 0-4 in his previous 10 starts and is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this season. Walker has not fared well against slugger Mark Reynolds (4-for-8 with two homers and a double).

Kyle Freeland is coming off a no-decision against the Atlanta Braves after surrendering four runs and 10 hits over six innings and is winless in his three starts since returning from a groin injury. During that three-game stretch, he’s struck out 17 batters in 17.2 innings. He defeated the D’Backs on April 28th when he allowed one run and six hits over six innings.

The Rockies are glad to be back home where they are 39-27 on the season. Walker has not been very good lately and I’m not taking anything from that win against lowly San Fran. Freeland will cool off the D’Backs here tonight and the Rockies will inch closer in the standings. It will be a busy night in Denver as the Rocky Mountain Showdown takes place at Sports Authority Field.

Pick: Rockies -110
