The Arizona Diamondbacks have had a rough road trip through the NL West, but can split the 10-game trek with wins in their final two games beginning Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies. Arizona began the trip with three losses in San Diego but bounced back by sweeping three in San Francisco. They have only scored five runs while dropping the first two games in Colorado and are in danger of slipping back to .500 with a loss Wednesday. Eduardo Escobar continues to swing a hot bat for the Diamondbacks and homered and drove in both runs Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to seven games (12-for-32 with three homers and 11 RBI). The Rockies look for their fourth win in a row against Arizona and their seventh in their last nine overall games. Catcher Chris Iannetta hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning on Tuesday to help the Rockies post a 6-2 win in the second of the four-game series. Colorado is currently 4-1 on its 10-game homestand and has won eight of its last 11 at Coors Field. Nolan Arenado’s string of seven straight multi-hit games ended on Tuesday, but the All-Star third baseman did score twice in the victory. Center fielder Ian Desmond is 5-for-10 in the last three games after collecting two hits on Tuesday.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (4-1, 3.26 ERA) | Rockies – Jeff Hoffman (0-1, 8.10)
Robbie Ray is on a streak of four straight outings in which he’s allowed two runs or fewer and the Diamondbacks are 5-1 in this last six trips to the mound. The lefty limited the Giants to five hits and two runs while striking out nine over 5.1 innings to pick up his fourth win in the 18-2 route. Ray earned the victory May 3rd at Coors Field after giving up five runs – one earned – and six hits over 5.2 innings and is 4-4 with a 5.43 ERA in 13 career starts against Colorado.

Jeff Hoffman will make his third start of the season and has not looked good in the first two against pretty weak offenses in Washington and Baltimore. He lasted five innings in each of those outings, allowing a total of nine runs and 13 hits including two homers against Baltimore on Friday. Hoffman is 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against Arizona.
I know Arizona is struggling, but they have a huge pitching advantage in Wednesday’s game. Ray is starting to look a lot better lately and is striking out a lot of hitters. Hoffman has been bad in his two starts and even worse in his career against the D’Backs. Look for Arizona to bounce back tonight.
