The Arizona Diamondbacks are climbing up the wild card ladder thanks to strong starting pitching recently and Robbie Ray will look to keep that going on Wednesday when his team meets the Texas Rangers. Arizona will be looking for the two-game interleague sweep of the reeling Rangers by winning for the sixth time in its last eight games. The D’backs starting staff is 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA in the last seven games and Arizona is within one game of the second NL Wild Card spot. All-Star Ketel Marte continued his torrid hitting with a two-run single on Tuesday and is batting .407 with seven homers and 13 RBI over his last 28 games. Ildemaro Vargas hit his fifth home run of the season in Arizona’s 9-2 victory in the series opener to hand Texas its ninth loss in 13 games. Texas welcomed back injured All-Star Hunter Pence to the lineup on Tuesday but he went 0-for-4 as the designated hitter after missing 23 games due to a groin strain. The Rangers fell five games back of an AL Wild Card spot despite getting the 22nd home run from All-Star slugger Joey Gallo. Texas will send Jesse Chavez to the mound in hopes of rebounding from a poor outing last time out.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (7-6, 3.81 ERA) | Rangers – Jesse Chavez (3-4, 3.84)
Ray has completed six innings in eight of his last nine outings including last Friday in St. Louis where he held the Cardinals to one run and two hits while recording eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a 4-2 victory. It was the second straight one-run outing for the lefty, who had failed to allow less than two runs in a start since May 13th. Ray is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in four career starts versus Texas.

Chavez was bombed last Friday at home against the Houston Astros, surrendering seven runs – six earned – and seven hits over 5.1 innings to drop his record below .500. It was his third straight start of allowing four runs or more and he owns a 5.28 ERA in 30.2 home innings. Chavez owns a 4.67 ERA in 12 career games (one start) versus Arizona.
These teams are going in opposite directions right now and the pitching matchup heavily favors Arizona in this one. Chavez has been terrible in his last three starts and the D’backs will pounce on him early.
