The Arizona Diamondbacks might be 14 games behind the first place L.A. Dodgers in the NL West, but that didn’t prevent them from taking two of three from them earlier this week and keeping pace in the wild card hunt. Arizona begins a four-game series at last place San Francisco on Thursday, just two games back of Philadelphia and Colorado for the second NL Wild Card spot. The D’backs lost the first five games on their latest homestand before grabbing three of the final four and are led by the red-hot Ketel Marte, who set a franchise record with multiple hits in eight straight games. The outfielder got Wednesday afternoon off from the starting lineup, but delivered a pinch-hit single in the 8-2 rout over the Dodgers to become the first NL player with 100 hits. Marte is a sizzling 22-for-34 during the last nine games for an Arizona team that is 24-19 away from home and will play 11 of the next 14 on the road. The Giants took two of three from the Diamondbacks last week, scoring 20 runs during the series, but the offense stalled in the first three games of their homestand. San Francisco dropped two of three from Colorado at home this week while scoring just seven runs total. The Giants are 28th in runs scored (3.87) and 30th in hitting (.224) and will send the struggling Tyler Beede to the mound to oppose rookie Alex Young. The road team has won seven of eight meetings this season, including a three-game sweep by the Diamondbacks last month in which they outscored San Francisco 34-8. Giants third baseman Evan Longoria got the day off on Wednesday and is mired in a 2-for-20 slump.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Alex Young (MLB debut) | Giants – Tyler Beede (1-2, 6.96)

Young will come from the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League into one of the best pitchers parks in the National League to make his major league debut Thursday. At Triple-A Reno, Young shifted to the starting rotation last month and went 2-3 with a 5.79 ERA in eight starts. He has yet to get past the fifth inning, but did have a season-high eight strikeouts on June 16th.

The road team is 7-2 so far in the 2019 season series.

Beede, a former first round pick in 2014, has yet to live up to expectations in his first full season and looks to get back on track with his seventh start on Thursday. Beede lasted only four innings in his last outing against Arizona, allowing four runs and six hits, but came away with a no-decision in the 7-4 win. He issued three free passes in that outing and has compiled 25 walks in only 32.1 innings on the season. Beede walked five in his major league debut last season versus the Diamondbacks.

I don’t usually take pitchers making their debut, but I’m taking Young over Beede in this one. The Diamondbacks have some momentum after taking a series from the Dodgers this week and play better on the road. The road team has won all but two meetings between these clubs in 2019 and the Giants hit just .218 as a team at home.
