The rising Chicago White Sox are creeping closer and closer to the .500 mark after a disastrous start to the season and are very much alive in the AL Wild Card race going into the second half. They look to keep the momentum going with a two-game series with cross-town rivals the Chicago Cubs starting Saturday as White Sox ace Lucas Giolito goes up against veteran lefty Jon Lester. Giolito has been really the only productive member of the pitching staff as the Sox are 26th in team ERA at 5.07 but make up for it with a half-decent offense that is getting better as the season progresses. The White Sox have won five of their last seven games overall with Yoan Moncada going 17-for-46 with four homers during an 11-game hitting streak and Jose Abreu is on an 8-for-19 run. The Cubs are going the other way, but are playing in a division that nobody seems to want to seize at the moment. The Cubs are tied with Milwaukee atop the NL Central entering Friday’s action, with the last place Reds only 3.5 back. The Cubs have dropped 15 of their last 24 overall after snapping a four-game losing streak with an 11-3 win at Pittsburgh on Thursday. Cubs RF Jason Heyward missed the last two games with back and hip issues and is questionable for the weekend series.

Lester has been up and down all season and is coming off a rough outing at Cincinnati last Sunday in which he allowed four runs over 5.2 innings in an 8-6 loss. He has been serving up the long ball more frequently recently – eight in his last five outings including two in a win over the White Sox on June 19th. The Cubs are 4-1 against the White Sox when Lester starts in his career.

Giolito won eight straight starts before facing the Cubs – and Lester – on June 19th when he allowed six runs and seven hits over 4.1 innings of a 7-3 loss at Wrigley Field. He bounced back after a rough outing in Boston on June 24th to allow one hit over five scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a victory against Minnesota on Sunday. Giolito, who has held opponents to a .191 batting average, is 5-1 at home with a 2.70 ERA in eight starts.
Giolito didn’t fare well a couple of weeks ago in Wrigley but he’s back on track now and should have no problem with the struggling Cubs. The White Sox young offense is starting to click now and they’ll be able to get to an inconsistent Lester.
