Opening Odds: Cleveland -125/9.5

The two teams from the state of Ohio got off to very slow starts this year and looked as if they weren’t going to compete for a postseason berth, but things have changed as we approach the All-Star Break. The Indians have gathered momentum and are all of the sudden just six games behind Minnesota in the AL Central while holding down the second wild card spot after winning four in a row and 19 of their last 27 overall. Wednesday’s 8-4 win over Kansas City moved the Indians 10 games over .500 for the first time this season as they prepare to visit the Cincinnati Reds for a two-game interleague series starting Saturday. Cleveland 1B-DH Carlos Santana, who is competing in Monday’s Home Run Derby at Progressive Field, is 14-for-38 during a 10-game hitting streak. The Reds are still three games under .500 but are very much alive in the ultra-competitive National League Central, trailing first place Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs entering Friday’s action by just 3.5 games despite their last place positioning. Cincinnati just got done taking three of four from the Brewers behind their terrific pitching staff, who have the third-best ERA in the majors at 3.65 and held Milwaukee scoreless for the final 21 innings of the series. Outfielder Yasiel Puig was the offensive star in the series, going 5-for-11 with two homers and four RBI in the final three contests.

Pitchers: Indians – Shane Bieber (7-3, 3.54 ERA) | Reds – Anthony DeSclafani (5-4, 4.35)

Cleveland is just 2-3 in Shane Bieber’s last five starts, but four of those outings were pretty solid and he got little run support in that stretch. He limited the lowly Baltimore Orioles to three hits over eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts and has allowed three runs or less in four of his last five starts. Bieber, who is 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in eight road starts, gave up three runs over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the Reds last year.

The teams have split the first two meetings this season with both going Under the total.

Anthony DeSclafani has also been solid over the past month, giving up one run or less in four of his last five starts. He followed up a rough outing at Milwaukee (six runs, eight hits, 4.1 IP) by pitching six scoreless innings versus the Cubs and striking out seven. DeSclafani has allowed one run in three of his four career starts against the Indians including earlier this season at Progressive Field over 5.2 innings.

Both teams are playing well, but the Indians still don’t hit very well and the Reds pitching staff has been dominant lately. Cincinnati has won 9 of their last 11 home games and they’ll keep that momentum going here.
