The Chicago Cubs continue their nine-game road trip with a visit to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team that swept the Cubbies in Wrigley Field just over a week ago. Chicago went on to lose the next game after that to Milwaukee, but since have gone 4-1 to get back into first place in the National League Central. The bats have come alive during the recent run, scoring an average of 7.8 runs a ball game over the last five. The Cubs don’t have a regular hitting over .300 currently, as Jason Heyward leads the club with a .297 batting average. Last year’s NL MVP Kris Bryant, is hitting just .230 on the year, but has a five-game hitting streak going. He hasn’t homered since April 15th when he launched two against Pittsburgh. The Pirates were swept by the Cardinals right after sweeping the Cubs, but took two out of three over the weekend in Yankee Stadium. Andrew McCutchen had a hit in all three games including his third home run of the season on Saturday. Third baseman David Freese leads the club with a .315 batting average and is tied with McCutchen at 9 RBIs. After this series with the Cubs, Pittsburgh will go on the road for 14 of their next 17 contests.
Pitchers: Cubs – Brett Anderson (1-0, 4.40 ERA) | Pirates – Chad Kuhl (1-1, 2.60 ERA)
Brett Anderson will make his fourth start of the season and is coming off a horrible outing against Milwaukee after starting the season with two solid starts. Anderson didn’t get out of the fourth inning last Tuesday as the Brewers tagged him for eight hits and six runs. He pitched one inning last August in a start against Pittsburgh as a member of the Dodgers, and the Pirates hit him for five runs and five hits including two home runs.
Chad Kuhl has been solid in his last two starts – both on the road – striking out nine, while walking one in 9.1 innings of work against the Red Sox and Cardinals. He walked six Braves in five innings in his first start, but picked up the win. He’s had three starts against the Cubs – all last year – and was hit hard each time, allowing 12 runs in 10.1 innings.

This could be a slug-fest, but the Cubs have the hotter bats right now and are looking more like the team that won it all last season. Kuhl has had no luck against Chicago and rarely pitches more than six innings. I think the Cubs roll tonight.
