Chicago Cubs (54-45) at San Francisco (50-50)
When: Monday, July 22nd, 2019
Where: Oracle Park,
San Francisco, CA
Time: 9:45 ET | TV: WGN
Opening Odds: Chicago -106/8.5
The San Francisco Giants have made a miraculous turnaround and they have a chance to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season when they host the Chicago Cubs on Monday night to open a three-game series. By winning 15 of their last 18 games, the Giants might have put a fire-sale on hold, as they have climbed to within 2.5 games of an NL Wild Card spot after Sunday’s 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Mike Yastrzemski belted a walk-off home run in the 12th inning to give San Francisco a series win (3-1) over the Mets despite being outscored 15-11 in the four games. It also marked their 22nd win against just 10 losses in one-run games and their fifth consecutive victory in an extra-inning contest. Chicago’s lead in the NL Central was cut to two games after Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, but the Cubbies are 7-2 since the All-Star Break and will begin a nine-game road trip that takes them to Milwaukee and St. Louis after this. Anthony Rizzo has been on fire for the Cubs, going 21-for-43 during his 12-game hitting streak after collecting two hits and their lone RBI Sunday. This will be the first meeting of the season between these teams after they split six meetings in 2018.
Pitchers: Cubs – Alec Mills (0-0, 4.50 ERA) | Giants – Shaun Anderson (3-2, 4.87)
Alec Mills will make his second start of the season and fourth in his career after holding the Reds to three runs and five hits over six innings while striking out six and walking one in a no-decision last Tuesday. This will be his first start against San Francisco and his first ever trip to the mound on the road.

Each of Shaun Anderson’s last four starts have gone over the total, with the light-hitting Giants winning each of those including an 11-8 win at Colorado last Wednesday. Anderson has an 8.78 ERA over his last three starts after allowing a season-high five earned runs over 4.1 innings at Coors Field while striking out one and walking two. This will be his first start against the Cubs.
The pitching matchup here is a wash because I don’t trust either one. Anderson has been pretty bad lately and the Cubs offense averages over five runs a game. The Giants offense at home is almost non-existent, so I’ll lean Chicago in the opener.
