It only took the Chicago Cubs one inning to help break their five-game losing streak and will try and keep the momentum going when they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third game of a four-game set on Wednesday. Javier Baez went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers – including a grand slam during a six-run sixth inning – in Tuesday’s 9-4 Chicago victory. Baez, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, has hit safely in seven of his last nine games and is 8-for-20 with 10 RBIs in the first six games of the Cubs’ eight-game road trip. Chicago rebounded from a poor offensive effort on Monday to even the series and could have their closer Brandon Morrow back from the disabled list in time for Wednesday’s contest. The Dodgers squandered a 2-1 lead on Tuesday and snapped their four-game winning streak. Cody Bellinger continued to stay hot for L.A., going 8-for-20 with three homers and seven RBIs during his five-game hitting streak. OF/SS Chris Taylor has gone 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs as a pinch hitter since suffering a hamstring injury. Chicago stuffed the transaction wire on Tuesday, placing 3B Kris Bryant (shoulder) and RHP Justin Hancock (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list, optioning Monday’s starter Duane Underwood to Triple-A Iowa and recalling 2B David Bote and RHPs Dillon Maples and Luke Farrell.

Kyle Hendricks has never finished a season under .500 in his four years with the Cubs, but fell to 5-7 on Thursday against Cincinnati after allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 5.2 innings. Hendricks seems to have caught teammate Tyler Chatwood’s control issues, surrendering 13 free passes over 21.2 innings this month. He is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in three career regular-season starts against Los Angeles.
Alex Wood has been going in the opposite direction with three-straight solid outings, allowing fewer than three earned runs in each after being hit for six runs over two innings at Colorado to begin the month. Wood is coming off a win at the New York Mets on Friday after allowing just two runs and six hits over six innings. He is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA in eight career regular-season appearances (five starts) against the Cubbies.
Hendricks is just not pitching well enough right now for me to take him. Chicago’s offense got a boost from Baez last night, but is still without Bryant and one night isn’t going to get me back on the Cubs. Wood has been strong lately and should pull out a win here.
