Opening Odds: St Louis -155/14

The only division race that seemed like it would come down to the wire was the National League Central, but the St. Louis Cardinals are doing their best to eliminate any drama. St. Louis took two of three at Pittsburgh over the weekend to open a six-game road trip and now lead the NL Central by 4.5 games over the Chicago Cubs with three weeks remaining. St. Louis will end the season with 16 straight games against teams with winning records including seven against the Cubs in their final 10 games. Cardinals’ pitching has been the driving force in their surge and have surrendered a total of two runs in their last five wins. It’s been over a month since St. Louis has lost a series and are a sizzling 23-7 over the last 30 games, and barring a collapse, are headed to the postseason. The Rockies’ season has been spiraling out of control for a few months now and are in last place in the NL West and have dropped 17 of their last 20 games including a four-game sweep in St. Louis last month. Colorado wasn’t very competitive in that series after dropping the opener 6-5, as they were outscored 25-7 in the final three contests. Colorado will go with righty Chi Chi Gonzalez to try and cool off the Cardinals, who will send Michael Wacha to the mound.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Michael Wacha (6-6, 4.98 ERA) | Rockies – Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-6, 7.29)

Wacha has been pitching much better lately, but isn’t going deep into games. He lasted just two innings against San Francisco on Wednesday after the team forced him to go on three days of rest. He was coming off an impressive start at home against Cincinnati when he held the Reds to two runs and three hits across seven innings. Wacha needed 113 pitches to get through 4.2 innings against Colorado on August 25th, allowing three runs and six hits in the Cardinals’ 11-4 triumph.

The Rockies have lost all nine games Gonzalez has started this season including Tuesday despite a quality start from the 27-year-old at the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed two runs and three hits in 6.1 innings without factoring in the decision and threw a season-high 101 pitches. His previous start was his ugliest to date, allowing seven runs and seven hits in two-thirds of an inning against Pittsburgh. Gonzalez suffered the loss at St. Louis last month after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings.

There’s no other way to go here except St. Louis. Colorado is 0-9 this season when Gonzalez starts and the team has lost 17 of 20 overall. The Cardinals have all the momentum and should win this easily.
