St Louis (48-46) at Cincinnati (43-50)
When: Thursday, July 18th, 2019
Where: Great American Ballpark,
Cincinnati, Ohio
Time: 7:10 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Cincinnati -120/9.5
The Cincinnati Reds had a big chance to cut into the Chicago Cubs’ lead in the National League Central this week but dropped two of three to fall 7.5 games out. They will now play 10 of their next 13 games at home beginning with the opener of a four-game series Thursday night against division rival St. Louis. The Reds might be turning into sellers leading up to the July 31st trade deadline, but are also just five games out of a wild card spot in the crowded National League. Cincinnati won the opener in Chicago, but lost the next two including a 5-2 loss Wednesday in which an eighth-inning rally fell short. Cincinnati will face division foes Milwaukee and Pittsburgh leading up to the trade deadline in addition to the Cardinals. St. Louis is off to a 4-2 start since the All-Star Break and took two of three at home from the Pirates to pull two games over .500 (48-46) but now faces eight games on the road at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The Cardinals sit three games back of the Cubs and only a half-game out of a wild card spot. St. Louis OF Tyler O’Neill is 10-for-20 with four home runs and 11 RBI in his last five games.
Pitchers: Cardinals – Dakota Hudson (8-4, 3.48 ERA) | Reds – Tanner Roark (5-6, 3.99)
Dakota Hudson will get the start for St. Louis on Thursday and is coming off his eighth victory of the season last time out when he limited the Arizona Diamondbacks to two runs on three hits and four walks over six innings. Hudson went seven consecutive starts without allowing a home run but surrendered a total of five in his last four outings. He is 2-0 in two starts against Cincinnati this season, allowing a total of four runs and 12 hits in 12 innings.

Tanner Roark had three straight solid outings to end June but has been hit hard in his two July starts including at Colorado last time out. The Rockies tagged him for seven runs on 13 hits on Saturday while surrendering three home runs. The Brewers scored four off him in 6.2 innings in his previous outing and he surrendered three dingers in that contest as well. Roark received a no-decision in his only outing against St. Louis this season when he allowed one run and six hits over 5.1 innings on April 13th.
Roark has looked terrible in his last two starts and has not enjoyed a lot of success against the Cardinals in his career. Hudson has won both of his starts against the Reds this season and should be able to make it number three on Thursday.
