Don’t look now, but the San Diego Padres are creeping back into the N.L. West race. After last night’s 8-0 thrashing of the Cardinals, the Pads are only 1 game under .500 and just 6.5 games behind the struggling Dodgers. San Diego was a preseason dark-horse by many (including myself) to reach the Playoffs this year. The year didn’t start out well, but now things are clicking in San Diego. They have won 7 of their last 8 and have a chance to sweep the Cardinals today. In their current 5-game winning streak they have outscored their opponents 34-8. That’s pretty impressive. St. Louis still owns a 3.5 game lead in the N.L. Central over Pittsburgh. They don’t have anything to worry about, they’ve just ran into a hot Padres team this weekend.
Michael Wacha will take his 14-4 record into today’s game against rookie Colin Rea who will be making only his 3rd start. He’s 2-0, but has failed to get beyond the 5th inning in his previous two starts.
The Padres are hot, but I think the Cardinals will salvage the final game of this series today. The pitching matchup heavily favors them.
Pick: Cardinals -140
